Dear False Positive Readers,
This is Ashley Walton, Mike’s sister and editor of False Positive. I have really terrible, awful news and a tiny bit of good news.
You might have noticed it’s been a couple years since we’ve posted anything on this website. Well, brace yourself for the saddest update I’ll ever share.
That poor, defenseless cube is going to die horribly, isn’t it?
There are so many more references here than I could possibly get. I’ll take Bubo the Owl and the Slayer’s ax from Buffy for $1,000, Alex.
Is that a weighted companion cube?
No heart, it’s just a cube. A cold, heartless cube. At least it won’t feel my betrayal.
Lets see…. the mask of the witch from your Yolk comic, the mask of Loki from the movie and comic series The Mask, Companion Cube from Portal, Bubo the mechanical owl from Clash of the Titans, the demon statue from The Exorcist, the golden idol from Indiana Jones, the sculpture Lydias mom made in Beetlejuice, the puzzle sphere that summons Fornicus from Cabin in the Woods, the evil doll from the Twilight Zone, the Marker from Deadspace, a stick figure from the Blair Witch project, the mask of Karl Ruprecht Kroenen from Hellboy. That’s all I got off the top of my head, anyone know the rest of them? Might that type writer be the one from the movie Delirious? If so…niiiice reference Big Mike, you’re not just playing top 40 hits, you went for the deep cuts.
Impressive. 🙂 I’d missed a good half of them.
The dagger on the wall is the dagger from ‘The Shadow’ or it could be the Ajonti{sp} Dagger from ‘The Golden Child’.
I feel like I should know more, but all I can add is the dagger hanging on the bookcase is from The Shadow. Go go Tim Curry fighting Alec Baldwin!
I notice there’s also the mechanical bug from Cronos on the shelf below the companion cube and the fornicus sphere.
Hanging below the mask from the mask is chester cobblepots key from the goonies. I KNOW i know the axe with teh spike on the bottom, and the mask inthe top left, but i cant remember where from. I think the sphere next to the companion cube is from … umm… Phantasm, i think it was called?
I thought it might be Phantasm too, but it looks too rigid, comprised of other parts. That’s why I think it was the puzzle sphere from Cabin in the Woods that summons Fornicus (a Pinhead pastiche). The sphere from Phantasm was (as I recall) perfectly smooth and metallic.
The axe on the right with the stake in the handle is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The bird mask on the upper right looks like it came from a movie called “Restoration” starring Robert Downey, Jr. The doctors of the Dark Ages used to wear them as filter masks when they treated victims of the black plague.
The typewriter is too generic to call. It could also be a reference to Alan Wake. The gong in the top left could be from Mark of the Ninja, but again, I’m not certain.
Under Loki’s Mask– isn’t that the skull-key from Goonies?
IT TOTALLY IS! NICE FIND! 😀
The Dagger on the wall above the safe is from the movie The Shadow.
That may be the scarab from Cronos between the two boxes.
Looks closer to the dagger/phurba from Uncharted 2
The dagger in the middle is a Kīla (or Phurba), but this one looks a lot like the one in the movie The Shadow.
http://falsepositivecomic.com/2011/09/15/concoction-page-4/
yes.
the freaking CASE! does this mean this is the original owner of the concoctions?? oh my shit XD
oh FUCK! Lewis Vendredee’s collection of cursed items! Sheesh! THAT was totally unexpected!!!
One of those books has got to be covered in human skin for summoning The Evil Dead
ohh just caught it
The round jar on the top shelf
Demon Knight (Tales from the Crypt Movie 1)
Brilliant find … and episode. Evil Billy Zane …
The Marker from ‘Dead Space’
The clockwork owl from ‘Clash of the Titans’
The Necronomicon from ‘Evil Dead’
The Companion Cube from ‘Portal’
The helmet from ‘The Rocketeer’
A statue from ‘Beetlejuice’
The Mask from ‘The Mask’
The effigy from ‘The Blair Witch Project’
The idol from ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’
A crystal skull from some other movie that never got made.
..more later.
I’d say crystal skull from house 2, because that other movie never got made ^^
That’s not the Rocketeer’s helmet
It would be funny if it was just some sort of immortal Otaku nerd…
Whoever this dude is, he’s a big movie/gamer geek. Some of those props had to be absurdly expensive and difficult to get.
Impressive page. Never expected to see so much pop culture in this comic. It’s a nice surprise 🙂
phurba, the three edged blade from the shadow and is that a cristal skull?
What’s in the box?!
case from concoction
axe from stink eye
bell from seance
typewriter from the shining
Aw, it’s like peeking into a goodie bag for all the comic/sci-fi- fantasy nerds!!! However, what really makes me curious is the suitcase
oh, the suitcase from concoction! silly me. Next question, what’s in the vault?
The typewriter could be Naked Lunch, The Shining or Delirious.
Oh, wait, no: the typewriter can be from Kolchak: The Night Stalker.
So it is the typewriter of Unmaking. Once Kolchak wrote the story on there, what he dealt with became unmade.
Love all the details in this page.
Next time on hoarders
The bird mask on the top right is a plague doctor mask (or beaked mask of Venice). Could be a reference to Eyes Wide Shut, but there are other media that reference it.
Stone Dagger from Uncharted
That is either the most secure or least secure safe ever .
(There’s no keyhole or combination dial, just the wheel which opens the external bolt)
The “Lament Box” from the Hellraiser series is conspicuous by its absence.
For my own part I am rather delighted and disturbed that the person furnishing this room has collected the witch’s mask from Yolk.
Looks like Bob the skull from Dresden files, some of the mothers art work from beetle juice, the scarab from Cronos, the gold idol from raiders of the lost ark,the Phruba dagger from the Shadow , and the mask from Karl Ruprecht Kroenen.
The idol on the far left is from Gorillaz, reject false icons.
quite the iconic collection ^^
as always, superb work!
Due to the other game references, I thought the typewriter to be from the Resident Evil series (it’s how you save the game)
Is that the Death Star next to the thing that looks like the companion cube?
I thought it was Fornicus’s orb (Cabin in the Woods).
OH MY GOD SO MANY REFERENCES! 😀
A little late but next to the Marker (i’m pretty sure) is the sculpture from the Ender game movie that Ender uses to smash the bully’s head in.
So, here’s my list. The first is my favorite, since I haven’t seen anyone else make the connection yet:
Piper’s axe – “Stink Eye” Comic
Mask – “Yolk” comic
Suitcase – “Concoction” comic
Bell – “Seance” comic
Bubo the Owl – Clash of the Titans
Slayer’s ax – Buffy
Mask of Loki – The Mask
Weighted Storage Cube – Portal
Pazazu statue – The Exorcist
Fertility idol – Indiana Jones
Delia Deetz sculpture – Beetlejuice
Puzzle sphere (summons Fornicus) – Cabin in the Woods
Ajanti Dagger – The Golden Child
‘Talky Tina’ – Twilight Zone
Marker – Dead Space
GOlden Scarab – Cronos
Stick doll – Blair Witch project
Mask of Karl Ruprecht Kroenen – Hellboy
Key (One eyed Willy) – Goonies
Typewriter – “The Shining”???
Is it possible to get a copy of this page without the people or the word balloons?
Yes:
Witch Library
Third object from the left, top row – generic Maya human-sacrifice marker/icon – could be Apocalypto or the first Indiana Jones or just life – those guys were almost Aztec in their mass produced murder/cannibalism slavery cult.
I think the only other things not mentioned are the napkin under the gong from Mu-Lan … kidding – that’s a gong from Big Trouble in Little China, and whatever placemat it is resting upon may have eldritch significance all on it’s own.
Nice Sargon of Akkad mask that everyone missed.
