   This tale reminds me of the horror novel “The Ruins” in which the natives keep anyone from fleeing the big bad. It’s also insinuated that this reduces the incentive for the big bad to ever leave or spread from its home. So this might also be a case of worship/maintenance.

    Hmph.. how hypocritical! I’ll kill and innocent woman…shoot her in the back.. whiles she’s running away and not a threat but oh no I won’t kill a child.. no never that would be immoral! What is that, some justification for cold-blooded murder?
    I hope the monster eats ALL these assholes {in typical lovecrafting fashion}..and molests their corpses!

    But I’m sure they’ll get off scott free..ah well. The universe {or at least this one}..cares not who gets ground under the wheels of ..plot! lol!

    The two creatures’ teeth, skin, and other subtle aspects of their bodies appear very similar… I’m wondering if the “pup” is the offspring of the big one, and further wonder if the big one’s appearance is influenced by what it eats… such as human heads…

    Next: the boy becomes the 5th member of the group and help his mother’s murderer to nurse the creatures. Just like the others lost their families and now are ‘worshipping’ the creatures.
    My theory. I bet it is totally wrong.

    100 Years in the future . . .

    1st geologist: This should be impossible, but here it is! This area has deposits of natural, pure plutonium!

    2nd geologist: It also looks like somebody was mining it. They probably mistook it for silver. I wonder what happened to those people. There is no way the radiation could have not effected them.

    1st geologist: Does it feel like the ground is shaking to you?
