Dear False Positive Readers,
This is Ashley Walton, Mike’s sister and editor of False Positive. I have really terrible, awful news and a tiny bit of good news.
You might have noticed it’s been a couple years since we’ve posted anything on this website. Well, brace yourself for the saddest update I’ll ever share.
Loving the somewhat Disney-esque style in this story.
“descend from the hills” “talk in the elevated company” already it seems thing will not go as planned, Clever Hound has doublethink in his plan =(
Poor sucker… I think he’s going to find himself disappointed.
Heh. “Men” can be the least ‘civilized’ sentient creatures on the entire planet! Not other creature treats its fellow creature with as much callous contempt and cruelty as men do to other men! The Clever Hound ought to count his blessings… he was NOT born a Human!
Humans only seem “evil” compared to other animals for three reasons.
1. Humans are intelligent and dominant. We have the means and the opportunity to be more cruel and destructive than any other creature. If these other creatures had the means and the opportunities we did, they would do the same. We are not as diffent from animals as you think and that goes both ways.
2. Humans are, as far as we know, the only creatures that are capable of percieving the wrongs we do as wrong. Therefore we are the only creatures that are responsible for their deeds. A human that kills for pleasure is more evil than, say, a cat that does the same for this reason.
3. You don’t see animals all the time. We have acces to a large portion of our history and we can see what humans all across the world from our living room. This means we can see and remember all the bad humans have ever done. We can’t say the same for animals. There lives are often hidden to us, and so are their cruelties.
Sorry for the long winded and sanctimonious response. I just get my panties in a twist when I hear people say that animals are moraly better than humans, when humans are still barely not animals.
+1
Oh no.. not saying that animals are more moral than humans.
Not at all .. Animals have no morals.. they have instincts. They do not do what they do out of evil or good… they have no concept of it. Oh don’t get me wrong.. animals know affection and hate.. but do not reason over the good or evil of their actions. Animals only know that some actions give pleasure or fulfillment and another actions give pain or loss of fulfillment.
THATS my point! Humans, we KNOW better and yet we still behave in some of the most barbaric ways to each other! We have no excuse.
Don’t we?
How long have we known that our actions can drastically hurt the enviroment?
How long have we known that humans are equal and that slavery is bad and noble borns should be able to be held to the same laws as everyone else?
How long have we known that war can be horrible and not some exciting adventure?
A hundred years, a thousand years? That’s just a drop of water in the bucket of the history of mankind. To expect us to adept to our new found morals immediatly is unrealistic.
Furthermore, the world is a cruel, unfair place. Since the dawn of life there has been nothing but merciless competition. There aren’t enough recources for every human to life comfortable, and the few we have are finite.
Our world does not reward good behaviour. It only rewards strength, cleverness, tenacity, ambition and ruthlesness. That we have developed morals at all is a miracle.
I’m not saying that humans are perfect or ever will be perfect. All I’m saying is that despite the odds we are living in an age where people have finally learned to be shocked at the actions of our species and we are slowly but surely changing our behaviour for the better. The last few centuries have, for better and worse, been some of the best for mankind and it seems that we are finally learning.
And that is something good.
any relation to mr. coyote? who knows?
digging the frequent updates bro.
I feel you.
Things have been vicious.
I’ve had some trouble the last few weeks: computer died, went out of town for the con, and I’ve been sick for over a week. Lame.
